Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM)
Meriden Public Schools is dedicated to providing students with a strong foundation in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). We believe that STEM education is essential for preparing our students for the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century.
By offering a variety of STEM courses, electives, clubs, and enrichment programs, we are equipping our students with the critical thinking, problem-solving, and innovation skills they need to succeed in college and beyond.
STEM in Meriden Middle Schools
Middle school is a crucial time to spark students’ interest in STEM. Engaging activities and experiences help students discover their passions and develop the foundational skills they need to pursue a diverse range of STEM careers.
Opportunities in Meriden’s three middle schools include:
- STEM Class, including Robotics in 8th and 7th grade (LEGO Mindstorms EV3 and VexIQ)
- Lego League Club
- Afterschool STEM Enrichment program for all middle school grade levels
- Afterschool STEM Club at Edison Middle School
STEM in Meriden High Schools
STEM programs at the high school level are designed to give students the in-depth knowledge and practical skills they need to pursue advanced studies and careers in STEM fields.
Both Maloney High School and Platt High School offer a rich variety of STEM courses, as well as opportunities for student internships, peer mentorships, and independent study in Science, Technology Education, Mathematics, and Computer Science. Available classes and electives include:
- Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) 1, 2, & 3
- Robotics 1, 2, & 3
- Engineering Drafting
- Introduction to Manufacturing (Goodwin)
- Principles in Manufacturing Math (Goodwin)
- Wood Technology 1, 2, & 3
